Starry setup
Frame game
Set up your camera on a sturdy tripod and compose your scene using Live View. An ultra-wideangle focal length like 15mm (or 10mm on an APS-C camera) will allow you to frame both an interesting foreground subject and a good portion of the starry sky above. Use the red light on your head torch to illuminate your camera’s controls without losing your night vision, and don’t worry about getting your focus spot-on just yet. Lock off your tripod and hang your camera bag on the centre column to help stabilize it if needed. Lastly, switch off any form of image stabilization.
