Nikon Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE)

£299/$297 Something old, something new…

-

The ‘Special Edition’ of this lens harks back to the glory days of 35mm film, with the texture of the grip areas and the font for the lettering being recreated from Nikon’s archive of blueprints. As such, it looks right at home on the Z fc camera and is available as a kit lens option, despite being full-frame compatible.

Cosmetics aside, the SE lens is optically, electronically and mechanically identical to the standard Z 28mm f/2.8, which has more mainstream Z-system styling. The only difference is that the retro looks come with a 2mm growth in physical diameter and a 5g weight-gain. In both lenses, autofocus is driven by the usual stepping motor, which is ideal for both stills and video, the latter benefitting from an absence of focus breathing.

Performance

Offering a fairly wide viewing angle on FX cameras, the lens gives a more natural perspective on DX bodies, equating to a focal length of 42mm. Handling is basic but refined, being practically identical to that of the Nikon Z 40mm f/2 lens on test.

N-photo verdict

This lens is ideal as a wide-angle prime for full-frame cameras, and as a ‘standard’ lens for DX bodies.
