Gobo stands for ‘go between optics’ and is used to describe an item that modifies light by its position in front of the light source. You can buy dedicated gobos and adapters that attach to specific light fittings, but any object that modifies light accordingly can be used as your ‘go between.’ Today, I brought with me a variety of card stencils and simply held them in front of the light. As the image (inset) shows, they work perfectly well. You could even make your own DIY gobos at home.
