Lake Magadi, Kenya
JIE FISCHER
Lake Magadi is an inland lake at the southernmost point of Kenya, formed by fault subsidence, and is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos. During the dry season it is 80 per cent covered by sodium carbonate, and salt deposits form colourful patterns around the lake, depending on the wind and waves.
