Step by step Take control of aperture
With a little trial and error, it’s easy to make sure your camera lets in the right amount of light
Choose a scale
Most Nikons give a choice of aperture scales, in steps of 1/2EV, 1/3EV or 1 EV. To switch scales, go to the Custom Settings menu.
Step up or down
Look for the menu item ‘EV steps for exposure cntrl’. Scroll to make your choice, then press OK. 1/3EV steps gives you the finest degree of control.
Look on the back
You can see which aperture setting you’re using on the viewfinder. Half-press the shutter button to see an f-stop number, left of centre.
Have a look on top
Mid- and high-end DSLRS and Z-series Nikons also have a top-plate LCD that gives a handy readout of your exposure settings, including aperture.
