BEST LAID PLANS

JUST HOW DOES CHRIS GO ABOUT PLANNING A NEW WORKSHOP IN A LOCATION HE HASN’T VISITED BEFORE?

-

I do a lot of research. The core trips I organize are in locations that I’ve already visited for commercial work, but I’m always looking to add new tours to the list. Right now we’re looking to run a workshop in Mongolia at the end of the year. I don’t just research the locations I want to go to, but the people I want to work with on the ground as well, and will generally try to get some references from someone I know. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a photographer. I know a lot of other people that also do a lot of intrepid travelling outside of photography workshops. Quite a few are of retirement age and some of them travel almost full-time, so they always have new places that they’ve been to that they’re willing to suggest. It generally takes a couple of years to organize a new photo tour, so it’s a one-at-a-time thing.
