Step by step Control your shutter speed

Adjust the amount of blur and sharpness in your images using Shutter Priority mode

-

Select a mode

Set the Exposure mode to Shutter Priority (S). Rotate the rear command dial to set shutter speed – aperture is regulated automatically.

Check settings

The best place to see the shutter speed you’ve set is in the viewfinder. Half-press the shutter button and look in the bottom-left.

Look at the LCD

You can also see the shutter speed in the Info display on the rear LCD. In Live View, the shutter speed may be at the top of the screen.

Top screen

Some cameras also have a handy top-plate LCD screen that also shows the exposure settings. Shutter speed is shown at the top.

Set the scale

You can vary the fraction by which you change shutter speed every time you stop up or down. Go to Custom Settings> EV Steps for Exposure Control.

Change the fraction

There’s a choice of 1/3 step or 1/2 step. Pro models also enable full steps, while entry-level models, such as the D3500, have fixed 1/3 steps.
