Car site in govt hands

THE factory that cranked out Chrysler and Mitsubishi cars for more than 30 years is likely to become Adelaide’s newest industrial park.

Mitsubishi has sold its manufacturing site to the South Australian Government for $32.5 million, completing the winddown of its local carmaking business.

The 64ha site will become a high-end manufacturing, research and new-technology base.

Mitsubishi can remain at Tonsley Park rent-free for 10 years, a deal worth about $20 million.

It has also retained spare parts storage and titles to several small sections of the site.

Chief executive Robert McEniry said: ‘‘This is an important benefit to us.

‘‘There are also other considerations, like not having to incur substantial moving costs.’’
