Top End serves up new triple turbo treat
BMW Australia chose Darwin and the Top End as the venue for the national launch of two new vehicles with ground-breaking new technology.
Journalists from Australia’s major motoring media were flown into Darwin this week for the launch of the new BMW X5 M50d and X6 M50d vehicles.
Sitting at the top of the BMW SUV range, these ve- hicles are powered by a technological first — a triple turbo diesel engine.
BMW says this has resulted in the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine in the world, combined with hallmark fuel economy.
The engine combines 280kW of power and 740Nm of torque — previously only seen in V8 and V12 engines — in a six-cylinder engine, providing a combined econ- omy of just 7.5l/100km. Comparative V8 and V12 twin turbo diesels have less performance, yet consume on average 9.2l/100k and 11.3l/100km respectively.
BMWworked closely with Tourism NT and local BMW management, including Paul Ogilivie-Mitchell, to make the launch a uniquely Territorian affair.
Starting with a Top Endthemed official launch at Wildman River, journalists were then treated to some of the Territory’s great Outback roads, culminating with a drive day at Hidden Valley Raceway.
Accompanied by BMW’s top driver trainer, journalists tested the vehicle in the controlled environment of Hidden Valley.
