Prisoner levels at record high
TERRITORY prisoner numbers have reached record levels this week.
A statement from NT Correctional Services said prisoner levels reached a new record of 1013 at Darwin Correctional Centre. The female section remains below capacity.
“NT Correctional Services has added 20 reserve beds to the Darwin Correctional Centre to create double bunking in some cells and a further 20 reserve beds will be ready by the end of this month,” a spokesman said.
“Extra custodial staff are being rostered on to manage the increased workload.”
The Territory prison system was at 111.2 per cent capacity on Monday with 1833 prisoners in custody.
