Pris­oner lev­els at record high

TER­RI­TORY pris­oner num­bers have reached record lev­els this week.

A state­ment from NT Cor­rec­tional Ser­vices said pris­oner lev­els reached a new record of 1013 at Dar­win Cor­rec­tional Cen­tre. The fe­male sec­tion re­mains be­low ca­pac­ity.

“NT Cor­rec­tional Ser­vices has added 20 re­serve beds to the Dar­win Cor­rec­tional Cen­tre to cre­ate dou­ble bunk­ing in some cells and a fur­ther 20 re­serve beds will be ready by the end of this month,” a spokesman said.

“Ex­tra cus­to­dial staff are be­ing ros­tered on to man­age the in­creased work­load.”

The Ter­ri­tory prison sys­tem was at 111.2 per cent ca­pac­ity on Mon­day with 1833 pris­on­ers in cus­tody.
