TOURISM Minister Lauren Moss says only final regulatory approval stands between China’s Donghai Airlines increasing its direct flight service from Shenzhen to Darwin to three times a week.

Ms Moss confirmed reports that the airline is working toward introducing a third weekly rotation for the month of August operating on Fridays.

“This is great news and reinforces Donghai’s commitment to making the route successful, bringing new Chinese tourists to Darwin,” she said. “The Northern Territory Government understands that Donghai Airlines is awaiting final regulatory approval and August 3 is the planned start date. This is a strong vote of confidence in the Territory.

“Since the inaugural flight ... more Chinese travellers have become aware of the route.”

“Since the inaugural flight on May 30, more and more Chinese travellers have become aware of the route and most importantly Darwin.

“It’s great to see that the airline is flexible and able to increase its service to meet demand.”

Ms Moss added: “The additional Friday service for the month of August gives Chinese visitors more options to visit our city in our beautiful dry season and when the city is in full swing with our iconic Darwin events.

“We have invested an additional $103 million in tourism and China is a key part of that investment for our industry. The additional non-stop direct flight from China will further reinforce our international competitiveness.”

Northern Territory Airports CEO Ian Kew said he was pleased to learn Donghai Airlines is aiming to increase its services to three times per week in August, which was a show of confidence in the inbound tourism market by the airline.

Territorians can book direct return flights from Darwin to Shenzhen, with flights scheduled to depart and return on Wednesdays and Sundays, and for the month of August Fridays.
