THE Kalkaringi community is mourning the loss of prominent Territorian Mr J Wavehill, who passed away on Wednesday.

Mr Wavehill was one of the last survivors of the crucial land rights movement Wave Hill Walk Off.

Northern Land Council chairman Samuel Bush-Blanasi

said Mr Wavehill would be remembered as a leader and advocate for Aboriginal people and their rights. “Mr Wavehill was an enormously important man in the land rights struggle,” Mr Bush-Blanasi said.

Mr Wavehill’s death came two days after the 55th anniversary of the momentous protest that is now firmly entrenched in Australia’s history, lore and evolution.

Renowned for his great yarns and good humour, Mr Wavehill was a devoted family man, cultural aficionado and a passionate advocate for his people. “We have lost a hero of the land rights movement and a true friend,” Mr Bush-Blanasi said.
