PGA TITLE POSTPONED AGAIN

- JOSH SPASARO

THE ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia has made the difficult decision to postpone the upcoming 2021 Tailormade Building Services Northern Territory PGA Championship to a new date in April 2022 – due to ongoing travel restrictions in place throughout the country.

Originally scheduled to be played August 19-22 and then pushed to September 16-19, the event at Palmerston Golf & Country Club will now take place from April 28 to May 1, 2022.

With so many of the tour’s leading players residing in New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand, and the current restrictions not allowing travel to the Northern Territory from those areas, the PGA Tour of Australasia had little alternative than to again reschedule the popular event.

“While it’s disappointing to need to postpone again, the restrictions currently in place don’t appear to be changing in the immediate future. And this has a huge effect on the quality and depth of field that we would be able to deliver to the golf-loving public of the Northern Territory,” said Nick Dastey, Tournaments Director Australasia for the PGA of Australia.

“This event has grown into a very popular stop on our tour since its inception in 2016, and we want to ensure we play our part in bringing the stars of our tour to the Territory and act as that vehicle for golf to be showcased to the Top End.

“The rescheduling to April will enable the country time to meet the 70 to 80 per cent (vaccination) thresholds being set and agreed by national cabinet that will enable free travel across the states’ borders. The late-April event will be the 2021 event and we would look to return in our traditional August date for the 2022 event, meaning double the enjoyment for all Territorians and our players in 2022.”

One of few events able to go ahead last year, the NT PGA Championship was played without the Victorian and New Zealand-based players and was still looked upon as a great success during difficult times.

However, all major stakeholders in the event were determined to see the best of the best return for the next staging on the pristine fairways of Palmerston Golf & Country Club.
