FITTING ARTISTIC TRIBUTE TO A POPULAR BIRD

- FLOSS ADAMS

THE iconic cockatoo of Nightcliff, Paulie, has been remembered and commemorated through a mural as part of the Darwin Street Art Festival.

Paulie and his owner Julio Da Costa were an unstoppable duo, a force that emitted sunshine and good tunes to Nightcliff locals’ days.

Artist Catherine Miles said Paulie meant a lot to the community.

“The mural is a tribute to him,” Ms Miles said.

“It was such a joy seeing him swing upside down.

“I wanted to have him immortalised in a way so everyone can still enjoy his memory even when he isn’t here.”

The mural can be found painted on the side of Nightcliff’s AlleyKatz’s Barber Shop.

“The tunes would always be blaring,” Ms Miles said.

“Paulie would be sitting on the front of Julio’s bike with his wings and its feathers, it was a sight to behold.”
