Val’s brave cancer battle
The former Top Gun heart-throb is getting back on top after his shock cancer diagnosis
His body may have been ravaged by cancer, but Hollywood star Val Kilmer isn’t letting it beat him! The actor, who is still recovering after a two-year battle with throat cancer and subsequent surgery on his trachea, is out of hiding and bravely going back to what he loves most.
Indeed, on May 19, Val beamed as he posed with fans at Motor City Comic Con in Detroit – just one of many Comic Con appearances he’s set to make in the coming weeks.
“He appeared in good spirits,” noted one fan who met him at the event. “Val was so gracious and smiled this huge smile when we walked into the photo booth,” added another.
And Val isn’t finished doing the rounds with his fans yet. Next month he’ll host a string of meet-and-greet screenings of Citizen Twain – a film version of his one-man stage show – in cities across the US.
Yep, having finally confirmed he’d been suffering from cancer last May in a Reddit chat following years of speculation, the Batman Forever star, 58, revealed the devastating diagnosis actually ended up putting things into perspective for him and gave him a new outlook on life.
“I was too serious,” says the father-of-two, who credits chemotherapy and his Christian Science faith with helping him heal. “I’d get upset when things like Oscars and recognition failed to come my way.”
And despite reports earlier this year that Val’s cancer had returned, this time spreading to his lymph nodes, it seems the star’s health is on track again. Glad to have you back, Val! n
The actor was flying high when he starred alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun in 1986 FAN FAVE Comic Con attendees in Detroit on May 19 were pleased to see their hero out and about again. “Have respect for this living icon,” gushed one diehard fan. The keychain Val was sporting while out in LA was Batmanthemed. Cuuute! While he’s doing better healthwise, Val says he still doesn’t ‘sound like my normal self’. One step at a time, mate!
