Emma & Jonah’s twisted twisted adventure adventure MANIAC

The Superbad co-stars reunite for a mysterious new Netflix series

You’d be crazy to miss Netflix’s most-anticipated show of 2018, Maniac, which brings together two of our big-screen faves on the small screen – and a Superbad reunion for Emma Stone and Jonah Hill!

Described as “multi-reality brain magic sh*t”, the 10-episode sci-fi comedy follows troubled strangers Annie Landsberg (Emma) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah) , who are trapped in a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial that ends up going pearshaped. But the side effects aren’t as minor as a rash. Nope, Annie and Owen end up caught in a spiral of alternate universes – Inception- style!

So how’d they end up in this mess? Owen – a “poor little rich boy”, suspected of struggling with schizophrenia – and Annie, who’s obsessed with her dysfunctional relationships with her family, both sign up for a three-day drug trial, taking a magic pill that “promises you a better tomorrow” with no side effects. Except there are...

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Annie, Owen and a bunch of other participants are thrown into a mash-up of different “realities”. In one, the pair – who become lovers – are raising children together, and in another they’re government officials plotting war.

Sound wacky? It is! Just ask the rest of Hollywood’s It-list who are part of the series. Roll call: Justin Theroux plays the doctor in charge, Sally Field is on board playing a celebrity therapist, and Julia Garner ( Ozark), Jemima Kirke ( Girls), Sonoya Mizuno ( Crazy Rich Asians), Gabriel Byrne

and Billy Magnussen all star in the series which is described as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Stranger Things meets Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

“The thing I liked about Maniac was that it’s about people who have their own internal struggles and are trying to fix them with a pill,” says Emma. “But you see over the course of the show that human connection and love is really the only thing that gets us through life. I liked that idea.”

The actress says reuniting with Jonah was another drawcard.

“I love Jonah. I had worked with him on the first movie I ever did [ Superbad],” says Emma, who admits the pair had lots to catch up on between takes. “Obviously lots of things have happened in the past 11 years, so it was nice to just get to be around each other.”

OUT WITH THE OLD

The director Cary Fukunaga admits to acting a little manic himself by throwing out half of the series’ scripts and starting from scratch three months before production was due to begin!

“I was saying this wasn’t good enough. We need to look at this again and tear it apart and go again,” he says, defending his decision. “I was like, ‘The whole joy in this is to be able to play with different worlds and we’re not doing that. So we need to... make that happen.’”

And taking the risk paid off! “It made it hard to budget, it made it hard to schedule,” says Cary. “But it was the right move.” Maniac drops Friday on Netflix

Annie (Emma) takes on multiple identities during the experiment Emma and Jonah are raking in a cool $350,000 each per episode

Justin and Sonoyo play the brains behind the experiment During filming, Justin was rumoured to be dating Emma ‘It’s really cool,’ says Julia of starring alongside Emma Jonah not only stars in the series, but also serves as an executive producer!
