It was clear from the be­gin­ning that Mary Pop­pins held a spe­cial place in Walt Dis­ney’s heart. Not only did he fight for more than two decades to ob­tain the movie rights from au­thor P. L. Travers, but after it was com­pleted, he at­tended the Os­car-win­ning film’s 1964 pre­miere at the fa­mous Grau­man’s Chi­nese Theatre in Hol­ly­wood. His pres­ence was sig­nif­i­cant – it was the first Dis­ney film pre­miere Walt had at­tended in al­most 30 years.
