ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO

JEANINE MASON ON THE 1999 REBOOT!

NW - - The Big Nw Turn On -

Ever since she was a kid, Jeanine Mason has been obsessed with space. “I am absolutely fascinated by it,” she says. So it was a dream come true when she landed the lead role of Liz Ortecho in Roswell, New Mexico – the reboot of the 1999 sci-fi series. “The cast and I sit around and talk about ancient aliens!” says the excited actress, 28. Here, she talks extraterrestrials, how to rock a reboot and what she loves about her character Liz...

How much did you know about the original series when you

signed on? I didn’t watch it, but my older sister did. I wanted to be a good leading lady for our fan base, and I knew I wanted to be able to put Easter eggs [in-jokes] in. So I read the book series and watched a good amount of the original show.

Did you speak to any original cast members? Jason Behr (who played hunky Max Evans in the original series) was just so gracious s and excited. He held me by both shoulders and said, “I cannot wait it for what is coming for you. Enjoy every minute, and I am here for you if you need anything.” I mean, it was a dream, honestly. How does Roswell, New Mexico’s Liz compare to Roswell’s

Liz Parker? Well, this is Liz Ortecho, which was the character’s name in the book. She’s incredibly intelligent, capable and older. She’s probably more jaded than most people would expect. She has a clear idea of what life is, a opinion on the world and a point of view, and that world view is just blown up by what she finds out – her tiny, sleepy town is harbouring a huge secret. There’s also the mystery of what’s happened to Liz’s sister... Rosa, for Liz, was her whole world. She was her big sister, and I have a big sister. I understand the dynamic of your idol that you grow up with. She has such a strong feeling in her gut that she is being ing lied to and that the story she’s been told about the circumstances surrounding her sister’s death aren’t true. I love that about her. How was it when Shiri Appleby, who played Liz Parker in

the original, directed an episode? I’m fully obsessed with that woman. She’s wonderful. She’s a boss! She has more love for this than anyone else on the planet. I feel so lucky to be part of the story for her and try to make her proud. You won Season Five of So You Think You Can Dance in the US. Will we see you bust a move at all in the show? Yes, we managed to sneak that in! Airs 8.30pm Wednesdays on Fox8
