The Victorian era was pivotal, says Cassie Doherty, and these houses have stories to tell
@ALBERTONHOUSE
Built in Mt Albert, Auckland in 1863 for the Kerr Taylor family, this was first a farmhouse on 500 acres. It was later expanded to an Indianinspired mansion. It sports a ton of original furniture and homeware for the perfect mix of cool and creepy.
@KATHERINEMANSFIELDHOUSE
In Thorndon, Wellington, built by the father of the acclaimed writer in 1888. Restored to show the life of a colonial family, it holds a collection of Katherine Mansfield’s letters and poems and some of her belongings. Look out for writers events, too.
@HIGHWIC1862
A gothic-style mansion built in Newmarket, Auckland in 1862 for the Bucklands. Always fascinating, with exhibitions, picnics, antiques roadshows, book launches weddings, and as a filming location.
