A PLACE TO STAY

Naomi Larkin visits Cable Bay Villa on Waiheke Island.

-

The global plaudits for New Zealand as one of the most desirable places to live have only magnified post-Covid and then in June, Auckland emerged as the number one city in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s The Global Liveability Index 2021. We’re hot and we know it. We know it because Kiwis have been backing their backyard even more since international travel all but ended and discovering new spots and old favourites.

For those wanting a taste of luxury Cable Bay Villa on Waiheke Island is the perfect choice. Just a ferry ride away from downtown Auckland, it’s attractive not just to locals but also to those keen to add an island stay to their city visit. A few minutes’ drive from both the passenger ferry and Oneroa village, the villa is hidden down a long driveway in Church Bay. This hilltop position has expansive views towards Mātiatia Bay and across Cable Bay Vineyards, while the extensive gardens, including olive and fruit trees, add to the beauty and privacy. With five bedrooms the two-storey villa can easily accommodate 10 guests. The beds are incredibly comfortable and the linen top-notch, so allow time for sleep-ins. There is also the adjacent stand-alone Guest House with a double bedroom.

With a large open-plan gourmet kitchen, spacious living area and a separate dining room guests can create their own meals however, one of the joys of this property is that it’s allied to Cable Bay Vineyards with its two restaurants The Bistro and The Verandah and an on-call chef.

Head chef Mark Nicholson oversees a slick operation using fresh ingredients, much of it grown organically in situ, and the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine is just delicious. Order the breakfast hamper to be brought to you as the bread and date scones are outstanding.

Cable Bay wine, made with grapes grown on the island and in Marlborough, is exceptional. Book a tasting at the Cellar Door as you’ll want to take some bottles home.

All of the above is enough to ensure a fabulous stay but it’s the personalised service and attention to detail that will ensure your return. cablebay.nz
