Saturday ain’t no day of rest in the Church of the Hop — it’s as full on as they come, and almost all entrants want a piece of the action. That starts in the morning, with entrants assembling en masse at either the Esplanade, for Ultimate Pass holders, or the Whangamata Rugby Club, for Standard Pass holders. What follows is a mega parade of vehicles down the densely packed main drag of Whangamata, leading perfectly into the two largest car shows of the day — the full-on Meguiar’s Main Street Car Show, and the more laid-back Ford Car Show at the Esplanade and Williamson Park end of town. However, that’s far from it. Basically, the entirety of Whangamata is taken over, with myriad sideshows to be found, including the Repco Pre ’49 Hot Rod Show, Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Show, Petrolhead Vintage Market, Cool Classic Car Show, Retro Caravan Show, and many more — a good excuse to have grabbed an official Beach Hop programme to find everything on the map. So much to see, and so little time to do it!
