Over the past few seasons, few racers have clocked up as many miles as Barry Plumpton. Having won both IHRA and NZDRA national series in his previously campaigned Chev Monte Carlo, he’s just done it again — this time in his mountain motor Camaro. Despite this being Barry’s first season with the car, with plenty of learning to be done, the car-and-driver combo is a force to be reckoned with. Running near the pointy end of the Top Doorslammer list right from the get-go at the IHRA Nationals, Barry dropped his already impressive PB to a staggering 6.16s at 235.23mph. To top off the achievement, he made it through the rounds to come up against Rod Harvey in the semi-final. While Harvey took the win, Plumpton’s points haul saw him take the national title. A week later, at the NZDRA Nationals, Barry became half of the quickest side-by-side doorslammer pass in New Zealand history, with a 6.125 at 222.95 beside Rod Benjes’ 6.308 at 229.83. His performance at the event was good enough to see him take the NZDRA national title, too — an amazing feat for a small localbased team!
