COOL CLASSIC CAR SHOW

LET’S GET AWAY FROM THE CROWDS FOR A MOMENT AND CHECK OUT THE LAID-BACK COOL CLASSIC CAR SHOW

- WORDS: ROD DUNN

Saturday is when it all happens; when Whangamata succumbs entirely to Beach Hop fever. From the massive Meguiar’s Main Street Car Show and Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Show through to the Whanga Books Tot Rod Show and Repco Pre ’49 Hot Rod Show, things at the business end of town can get a little hectic. For those seeking a reprieve from the hustle and bustle, and the potentially overwhelming large crowds, the Cool Classic Car Show is the place to be. A five-minute walk down to the end of Port Road towards the wharf is where you will find Te Titoki Reserve. The reserve backs on to the sand dunes and ocean — a fantastic location that exemplifies everything Whangamata, and Beach Hop, is all about. The Cool Classic Car Show is designed for those entrants who want to participate in the show but can’t do the full five days of Beach Hop. Any Saturday Day Entrant or Repco Beach Hop 18 entrant was able to park up and be included as part of the fun and festivities. Around 60 vehicles and two boats were parked up for the public to view, and saw a steady stream of people throughout the day. As well as the mixture of classics on show — which included everything from Corvettes and Pontiacs through to Ford Escorts — the Ocean Sports Club was open for those looking for a bite to eat or some liquid refreshment. The president of the Whangamata Coastguard was also invited to select his favourite car of the day — an honour bestowed on James Duffy’s ’63 Chev Impala, with a prize presented at prizegiving later on in the afternoon.
