CIRCUS BURLESQUE SHOW

WE’LL NEVER LOOK AT TASSELS IN QUITE THE SAME WAY AGAIN

- WORDS: ROD DUNN

True to tradition, Repco Beach Hop 18 started off the weekend of festivities with the Go Waihi Warm Up Party on Wednesday. With many participants having travelled from afar that day to begin their Beach Hop experience, the Wednesday of Beach Hop can be, and usually is, a full-on event. In the evening, after the party has wound down, it’s nice to sit back, rest, and unwind from such a big day. However, some aren’t ready to kick back and put their feet up, so Wednesday night’s entertainment would have been right up their alley. Held on the main street of Whangamata in the Jack Daniel’s HQ, the Aloha! 1950 Rock’n’Roll Circus Burlesque Show is a recent addition to the Beach Hop itinerary. While burlesque in itself isn’t an all-new experience at the Hop, it was the success of last year’s tassel spectacular that brought the award-winning Aloha! 1950 show to Whangamata. As with last year, the burlesque show was well attended. By the time the first act was over, the 200-strong crowd were in full voice, thanks in no small part to the free-flowing amber liquid. We were also left no doubt as to why this is an R18 event. As the night progressed, acts came and went from the stage, followed by yelling and cheering from the very appreciative crowd. They’re unlikely to look at tassels in quite the same way again! Over the course of the evening, various games were held between acts. These games required audience participation, and generated many laughs among the crowd. If you missed out on this event this year, be sure to get tickets to next year’s, as it really is a great night out … and the tassels flying everywhere sure don’t hurt, either.
