WHAT IS ‘OUTLAW 71’?

-

utlaw 71’ is the brainchild of long-time Masterton Motorplex commentator Gavin Doughty and Tod Aitken from Maxxed Out Racing. The duo had thrown the idea around for a while, and, with the knowledge that a combined IHRA/NZDRA series wasn’t going to happen, they’ve pushed ahead with the new class. As Gav said, “It’s for black-belt supercharged vehicles based on the Supercharged Outlaw [SCO] cars, but, as SCO allows turbo cars, a different, more suitable name was needed. So Outlaw 71 was formed based on the ‘Outlaw’ from SCO and ‘71’ from the old blowers — 6-71, 8-71, etc. The cars will qualify on reaction time, and race DYO [dial your own] in brackets of 6.5 to 7.9. It’ll be racer return, so you get the whole field through all rounds to make sure there’s a good show for the crowds.” The class currently has four rounds booked: Masterton, Taupo, Christchurch, and Motueka, in that order. At the time of print, 15 cars are confirmed, with many more set to join. The idea is to run full 16-car fields, if possible, and close it off at 20 cars to ensure that all races get completed.
