GENUINE FORD GT40 UNEARTHED IN GARAGE

-

We don’t need to tell you how ultra-rare a genuine example of Ford’s iconic GT40 is. They’re simply one of those dream cars that 99 per cent of us will never own. Finding one that’s been stored unused in a garage for decades seems even more unlikely. However, one such discovery took place recently in the US after car collector Thomas Shaughnessy caught wind of one sitting under a pile of household junk in an unassuming garage.

Identified as chassis number P/1067, it turns out that the car is actually the last unit produced! A 1966 Ford GT40, it was sold in 1976 sporting a MkII rear clamshell, making it just one of three cars known to have this particular rear and the only example still left. The current owner raced the car until 1977 when an engine failure sent it into an early retirement. It has been waiting to be rescued ever since. Now that it has been uncovered and saved, the idea is to restore the car to its original factory specifications and bring it back to life with the ’60s livery it wore in period.

We guess there are still a few gems out there waiting to be discovered.
