Aquaman aka Arthur Curry – played by Jason Momoa – is ready to show the world what happens when the heir to an underwater kingdom must step up. ‘He’s supposed to be king, but he doesn’t want it,’ says the 39-year-old. Here, Jason takes us under the sea to celebrate his latest role…
Arthur is actually very funny! [Director] James Wan is very goofy and funny. He really wanted that wonderment and for people to fall in love with this journey. He was really open to me improvising things and adding little pieces of me.
Do you relate to your character? I was born in Hawaii and raised in Iowa. Straddling those two worlds, and being an outcast in both, and finding my own path in this world, I relate to that. I’m also kind of a goofball, and there are moments where he’s a rascal. He also puts his foot in his mouth quite often.
What was it like putting on the suit? The coolest moment was when I Facetimed my wife [Lisa Bonet] and kids [Lola, 11, and Nakoa-wolf, 10] and I saw their faces. It’s very bright, very loud and it’s awesome. People responded very well to it. It wasn’t important what I thought, but how people looked at it.
Are your kids impressed? My wife held up [the phone] showing them the trailer, so I got to experience watching it with them. They were like, ‘Papa, you’re so cool.’
Jason has ‘never seen anything like’ the ‘elaborate and crazy’ underwater fight scenes.
‘[Amber is] a trooper… I would get in and out of my suit the moment they said cut. And this poor woman stayed in it the whole time,’ says Jason of his co-star Nicole Kidman plays Aquaman’s mother, while Amber Heard stars as his love interest Mera
