Yamaha brings back the big single
After a gap of several decades, one of the world’s favourite motorcycles is back on the Australasian market. The Yamaha SR500 was launched locally in 1978, inspired by the road/trail XT500 that went on sale a few years earlier. The classic styling, nimble handling and ease of maintenance was a winning formula, attracting legions of loyal customers. The graphics for the original SR500 were designed by Sydney advertising agency Harris Robinson & Associates. Meanwhile, in Japan, local legislation created demand for a 400cc version, which became a top seller and has remained so for more than 35 years. While retaining the styling attributes of the original model, the new 2014 SR400 incorporates fuel injection to conform to current emissions regulations and to provide easier starting and better fuel economy. Retaining the original kick starting system, a new transistorized ignition system makes the task of firing up the big single much easier. Spoked wheels with a single front disc and rear drum brake, swept back megaphone-style exhaust system and teardrop fuel tank give the new SR400 a pure traditional appearance. At $8,999 + ORC it’s bound to be a strong seller. Watch for a full test of the new SR400 in our next issue.
