Melbourne’s Classic & Custom Japanese Motorcycle Club’s first annual get-together was a huge success, reports DEREK PICKARD. On a hot March day in the southern capital, they combined with the Austrian Club to try out the new venue for motorcycle club events. The result was over 140 bikes and 500 people attended. 65 bikes entered the display competition. Located in Heidelberg, it was the first time the Austrian Club had opened its excellent facilities to a motoring event and the venture impressed everyone. The bikes lined up on the lawns while the visitors enjoyed true Austrian hospitality in the form of traditional beer and food from the many outdoor buildings. As well as the rows of Japanese bikes, the event was also attended by classics made in UK, Europe and the USA.
Organiser, Phil Watkins, said: “We publicised it only locally by social media and still we got a great turn-up. Our members with classic and custom Japanese motorcycles were delighted with the day. I have to also thank the Austrian Club for opening up their first class venue for what I’m sure will be many motoring club events. It’s a great place for a great day. In putting on what we did it was the way I wanted to get away from the traditional bike shows which are mainly in a paddock with few or no amenities. Our event had reason to bring the family as it was very child and food friendly with a fantastic clubhouse for those who preferred an indoor bar, cafe and restaurant.
