Yet more on Wally

Re­gard­ing the let­ter about Wally Gib­son on page 11 of OBA 46, my wife and I re­mem­ber he and his wife Ivy quite well and with much af­fec­tion. Wally was a mem­ber of the Clas­sic and En­thu­si­asts MCC in its early days here in Syd­ney. He would use his New Zealand ori­gins to pro­mote vis­its to Oz by well known Kiwi motorcycle cham­pi­ons, such as Bob Burns (World Speed Record holder) and Hugh An­der­son. Wally used to look after Col Brench­ley’s mouth-wa­ter­ing col­lec­tion of bikes. Back in those days, the C&EMCC used to hire the Ar­ca­dia short cir­cuit from time to time, for a week­end of fun and gen­eral muck­ing around on what­ever you brought along. I well re­mem­ber be­ing there about thirty five years ago, only a new mem­ber of the club, when Wally asked me if I would like a ride on Col Brench­ley’s Vincent twin. After I picked my jaw up off the ground I said “yes please” and took the Vincent for a low speed pot­ter for a kilo­me­tre or so along the dirt road out­side the cir­cuit. He was very gen­er­ous like that. Ivy was quite a well known
