Ken and Bob

-

In Rally Roundup, there is a photo of my Dad (Ken Jones) & Bob Satterly at the recent Vincent & Velocette Rally. Bob and Dad have been friends for many years going back to the late 1940s when they met at school. They later went to college together and worked with each other off and on over the period of their professional careers. I thought readers might like to see the attached photo (above) which was taken in 1949 at Mudgee, NSW. They were at this time at college together and used to take regular “Road Trip” breaks with their other friends. It shows my father (Ken Jones) on the far left on his Triumph Speed Twin and Bob Satterly second from right (Series B Vincent HRD Rapide). Also in the photo are Bob Carter (2nd from left, BSA Twin), Eric Carter (3rd from left, Triumph Speed Twin) and Allan King (far right, 350 Ariel Red Hunter – less headlight interior and generator that had vibrated off while being ridden flat out to keep up with the others). Ken and Bob are trying to track down Allan King. Tony Jones Via email side piston. A new piston and a bit of a rub with emery paper and I was flying again! Just before it nipped it went onto reserve at full throttle so I think it ran lean for an instant and cooked the piston.

I rode it to Phillip Island two-up and got into a traffic light derby with a bloke in a XW GT Falcon. We had a few goes but with the pillion I could only just hold him. Believe it or not I told the pillion to get off while I nailed the GT and return for her but she didn’t see the practical side of that at all and clung on like a limpet (not that I was unhappy with that). Just goes to show you can’t win ‘em all. I had it for 2 years and sold it for more than I paid and bought a used green Honda 750 from Peter Stevens. The blokes I rode with moved on to the Mach 4 but I ended up getting the Jaffa 900 instead. Bill Graham Sunbury, Vic
