All Bike Show

- Report and photos Dale Kennedy

July 19-20, 2014 – Mackay, Qld.

“One of the best All Bike Shows ever” was what most of the people said as they were writing down their choice for bike of the show. The diversity of machinery was incredible; everything from a display of Ron Spiller’s Sachs-powered mopeds through to Lucky Kaiser’s not-yetcomplete latest creation – a V-twin (the front two cylinders off a Spitfire Merlin engine) in a copy of a Norton featherbed frame. That created shock and awe every time it was started to let the public hear the sound of this beast. The best club display was won by the newly founded Whitsunday Speedway Club who were supported in the efforts to bring Solo Speedway racing back to Mackay by Jason Crump loaning them his one of his World Championship bikes for their display. Ron Stayt’s world land speed record holding Kawasaki was also on display and this year the number of classic Hondas and Kawasaki machines that were as good if not better than when they were new were at the show. There were two BSA VMX bikes amongst the completion bikes that looked too good to be raced, but they will be soon in South Australia at the National titles. And as usual the British machinery was outstanding; everything from the 1914 Triumph Junior that won People’s Choice, a beautiful Norton Commando Fastback that had been through several owners before being tracked down by its original owner and restored better than new – so much so it won its class. There were a few unusual pieces of machinery; a Cheney Scrambles
