I was enthralled to read the report on the 1954 Redex Trial in OBA46 and pleasantly surprised to see a photo of my uncle, Joe Phillips; the winner of the B grade section. I thought I might share a couple of his anecdotes of the event. It was actually my uncle who stopped and rendered assistance to Max James who broke his leg in an accident at Menindee and as reported in the media he (Joe) had a number of points deducted due to the delay this caused. After a protest regarding the circumstan­ces these points were reinstated. My uncle also used to tell me the bush was littered with a number of front mudguards as an often necessary ‘in race’ modificati­on was the removal of this item due to mud building up and locking the front wheel.
