Shannons Australian Historic Road Race Championships

September 25-28, 2014 – Lakeside Park, Qld

after motorcycles last raced at what was then known as Lakeside International Raceway, the historic circuit burst back into life for the running of the Shannons Australian Historic Road Race Championships over four days in September. Much safety-related work had been done by circuit owner John Tetley, and by members of the organising club, the Queensland Early Motorcycle Sports Club. This involved removal of Armco barriers to provide extra run off, plus the addition of a stop-go chicane which proved universally unpopular with riders but was deemed necessary to allow the track to be licenced. It is hoped that a more effective solution can be found for future meetings.

The meeting itself was an unqualified success, with a capacity entry and a massive spectator turnout over both days of the weekend. Organisers were faced with a formidable task to complete a very tight program with a plethora of classes, but despite a few hiccups caused by a freak storm on Thursday and the inevitable delays due to oils spills and mishaps, the program ran pretty much to schedule. Most regrettably, the meeting came to an abrupt end late on Sunday, with three races still to run, after a serious accident which claimed the life of leading Period 6 racer Steve Anderson from Orange NSW, who had earlier won the first two rounds of the Formula 750 class.
