In the late ‘fifties and early ‘six­ties, the Isle of Man In­ter­na­tional Scooter Rally was the Olympics of mini-mo­tor­cy­cling. You had to be mildly ec­cen­tric of course, but there was no short­age of pa­trons who flocked to what was also called the Hol­i­day Week for Scooter­ists, much to the de­light of the Manx Tourist Board. There were all sorts of fun and games, in­clud­ing blats around sec­tions of the TT course, but as hap­pened at our own Bathurst races, an un­de­sir­able el­e­ment grad­u­ally crept in and cru­elled it for ev­ery­one. The 1980 event was the last straw, with Mods and Skin­heads beat­ing the snot out of each other, lead­ing to the Manx gov­ern­ment ban­ning scoot­ers from en­ter­ing the is­land. That ban re­mained in force un­til 2002, by which time most Skin­heads were in nurs­ing homes. This lit­tle book is a glance back at an era that will never re­turn – in­no­cent fun that went off the rails. dur­ing pro­duc­tion runs. Nev­er­the­less, you can guar­an­tee the vast majority of avail­able in­for­ma­tion is within th­ese pages, along with dozens of pho­tos of the big twins and triples. The 750 SFC – for many, the ul­ti­mate Laverda – has a chap­ter all of its own, and there is nat­u­rally a rac­ing sec­tion, be­cause track suc­cess was so cov­eted by the Bre­ganze company. Laverda be­gan rac­ing post war in the big in­ter-city events like the Mi­lano-Taranto with their lit­tle 75cc, and kept it up for decades, no­tably in En­durance rac­ing, for which their unique V6 racer was cre­ated. The usual Tech­ni­cal Spec­i­fi­ca­tion chap­ter com­pletes a fine book.
