Of Mondials and Ajays
page 25 mentioned the Mondial ridden by Jack Saunders in the 125cc GP at Bathurst in 1963. The previous year, I rode a similar machine in the Bathurst 125cc GP. There was a field of 49, including such names as Kel Carruthers (MV Agusta), Trevor Pound (Walsh Bantam), Ken Rumble (Ducati), Kevin Cass (BSA), and the winner, Allan Osborne on a Honda. On another note, I have included a photo (above) of my 1955 AJS model 20B twin, 550cc. This bike is a Frank Cooper special, brought in from USA. I purchased the bike from Jon Munn (Classic Style Australia) in 1996. I wonder if any reader has information on this bike and its association with Frank Cooper? The frame has been shortened at the rear and the shock absorbers are at an angle, as on a 7R AJS. It came with a scoop on the front brake, a competition petrol tank, and a tacho. Engine number is 55/20B 23740 and frame number is 23529. The company was later responsible for the Cooper MX and Enduro bikes, built in Mexico. – Ed
