OBA 49 Bathurst 100 Rally

Due in no small part to the exhaustive research conducted by OBA contributo­r Peter Shannon, the history of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is now much clearer. The feature story in OBA 47 gave the full background to the 1914 and 1915 Grand Prix races, held on a 15.5 mile (24.8km) circuit linking the villages of Kirkconnel­l, Sunny Corner and Meadow Lea, approximat­ely halfway between Lithgow and Bathurst. On Saturday November 8th, a dedicated group led by historians Geoff Fry and Bob Newton staged a celebratio­n of the 1914 Grand Prix, 100 years and one month after the event. A huge roll up of veteran machines, some ridden by gentlemen and ladies in period costume, descended on Kirkconnel­l, which is today little more than a basic timber church, which stands just 200 metres from the starting point of the 1914 race.
