Speedway history in Bathurst

We briefly visited Ash Sutton’s Speedway Museum in Bathurst when it opened a few years ago, but it has come a long way since then, as MARK LOITERTON, from Cootamundra, discovered recently. “I was in Bathurst a few weeks ago for the Long Track Masters and visited the museum – I was amazed at the collection Ash has on display. A lot of history is evident with bikes belonging to famous Australian riders, memorabilia adorns the vast wall spaces of the large premises. It is all in categories and eras and is very well presented and easy to follow. Ash has funded the majority himself and a lot is on loan from families and it is a brilliant tribute to people that shaped the sport that this Country started. Allow at least 3-4 hours to take it all in, very impressive. “The Sunday morning I was there, was like a who’s who of the sport with many making the visit as Ash opened early and had brekkie available. I will visit again and spend more time to take a better look. “Almost simultaneously, we received a similar note from Paul Hancock, who said, “Earlier this year whilst caravanning in the Bathurst area I came across a magnificent collection of speedway machinery and memorabilia at ‘Ash’s Speedway museum’. This huge shed/ware house has a display that is second to none. There are displays of vests from all over the world and the bikes, oh the bikes are brilliant. There is a memorial section to the late Billy Sanders, tribute to Ivan Mauger plus the Crump father and son achievements.” Ash’s Speedway Museum is located at 2/10 Bradwardine Road Bathurst NSW 2795, phone 0439 978602.
