Old Bike Australasia

H2s rule

Congratulations on another fine magazine, the 51st addition covers two bikes which are very close to my heart; the Kawasaki H2 and the GSXR 750 Suzuki. Both these bikes were in my view real icons of their day. I have been a keen fan of motorcycle racing all of my life and have been a spectator at most meetings since the early 1960s so consequently saw both these bikes in action racing in New Zealand. When Production Racing was introduced into New Zealand the open class was dominated by H2 Kawasakis with riders like Graeme Crosby, and I vowed that one day I would have one of these bikes. It took me till 1990 to be able to afford one and another 19 year’s searching for all the parts worldwide to rebuild it! When the GSXR750 was introduced I rode a pre-production bike, it was however too cramped for me as a road bike and I ended up buying a new GSXR1100 in 1986. I loved this bike and along with a 1991 GSXR1100 were two bikes I wish I had never sold. Suzuki dominated New Zealand racing ever since the introduction of the GSXR range and they were and still are a real icon, so much performance for so little money; certainly a lot better than some so called exotica costing nearly twice as much money! It was also good to see the photos of Robert Holden, in my view one of the best Kiwi riders of all time and had things been different he should have gone a lot further than he did. I have attached a photo of my Kawasaki H2, with Graeme Crosby. Ross Charlton Paekakariki, New Zealand
