Old Bike Australasia

I write regarding your article ‘Double Trouble’ on the Linto 500cc as I have some acquaintance with the one that Graham Lock owned and which you featured. In late 1975, I bought my first house – in Morphett Vale, south of Adelaide. I was especially happy that it had a garage with plenty of room for my 1974 Ducati 750GT, tools, a bench, and an old car seat to relax on. The Duke was a great one to learn on and I often went away on rallies with it. On the Sunday morning after moving in, I was abruptly woken by a bellowing machine. It took mere seconds to realise it was a bike of some kind (though not someone stealing mine, thankfully), and not much longer again to discover Graham trying to bump start the Linto in his driveway right next to my bedroom window. I found out that Graham had a similar Ducati to mine except that his was red and black rather than mine of brown and bronze colour scheme. He had a group of friends who owned, among other things, a 900SS, another 750GT, and a Sunbeam with a VW engine. They would gather in our street before a weekend ride, and Graham and I sometimes went together on Ducati Club rides as we were both members. In March ’76, we took the Linto out to Virginia International Raceway so that Graham could try to sort out the carburettors. That was not what you could really call a success.
