Old Bike Australasia - - BUZZ BOX -

The 2016 Barry Sheene Festival of Speed at Sydney Motor Sport Park (March 18-20) is set to be the biggest ever, with a galaxy of former Grand Prix competitors on the bill. Three times World Champion Freddie Spencer was so impressed with his visit this year he has assisted event coordinator Peter Macmillan to sign up six other big names for the meeting. 1993 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz, four-times 250/350 champion Kork Ballington, 1984 250 World Champion Christian Sarron, and former works riders Steve Parrish, Graeme Crosby and Didier de Radigues will all saddle up for the GP Legends Clash, which will be held over four rounds throughout the weekend. They will be mounted on some rare and expensive machinery, much of it sourced from the stable of British collector Steve Wheatman. These include the ex-Sheene 1975 XR14 RG500 Suzuki, Kevin Schwantz’s 1994 XR84 Suzuki, a 1995 XR88 Suzuki to be ridden by De Radigues, a Mk6 RG500 Suzuki to be ridden by Parish, and a Honda RS500 triple for Spencer. In addition, GP winner Kevin Magee will be reunited with the works YZR500 Yamaha on which he contested the All Japan title. There will also be ex-Team Kawasaki Australia bikes to be ridden by Ballington and Murray Sayle and on static display. “I want to emphasise that we (the PCRA) are not expecting riders to pay for the GP Legends Clash,” said event co-ordinator Peter Macmillan. “We have kept the entry fee the same as in 2015 and we think this represents very good value for the competitors. Hopefully, having the Legends there will enhance the overall appeal of the event to a much wider audience, so we will all benefit.” As in previous years there will be a host of trade displays and stands, bike club displays and the popular Spectator Parade laps. For 2016, the event will be held over four days, with private practice on Thursday, qualifying on Friday morning and racing from Friday afternoon. The feature event, the Barry Sheene Top 50, will be contested over four 6-lap legs.

Coming to the 2016 BSFoS: Kevin Schwantz, Steve Parrish, Didier de Radigues, Graeme Crosby, Kevin Magee and Freddie Spencer.
