Thank you for the article in OBA 57 on the Honda CB900F, it brought back many good memories. The first 1979 CB900FZ model was a very impressive motorcycle. I nearly bought an immaculate blue second hand one in 1980, I should have and kept it! Later I bought a new black 1981 CB900FB from Harry Miller Motorcycles in Parkdale (Vic) and owned it for over two years and 60,000 km, including trips to NSW, QLD, Tas & WA. Although rather tired by this stage (burning some oil and blowing some smoke), its only faults were a wiring harness and an ignition coil, both replaced under warranty by Harry Miller who ran a good small ‘old school’ Honda dealership with his wife and sons (Harry sadly died of cancer a few years later). Pic attached of when the bike was new.

More recently I bought a blue 1980 CB900FA from a fellow Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club member. It has since needed the main cam chain, tensioner and guide replaced, a common issue with this model. It was originally a Victorian police motorcycle and still has the special white faced police speedo fitted. Although nowhere near the concourse standard of the red CB900FA in the OBA article, it is a nice machine to own and ride. Note that the older single piston calliper brakes do work better with braided lines. Some new parts are still available from Honda and the world wide web provides many other sources of parts and information. OBA is a quality magazine with a great variety of articles on all types and ages of classic motorcycles, please continue with your excellent work. John Doward Pearcedale, Vic Thanks for the letter John. You’re this issue’s recipient of a stylish Raritee tee shirt in your choice of design, although I’m betting it will be a CB900F! – Ed
