Red Scarf Rally

- Report Rob McFadden Photos Rebecca Gregory

The picturesque Black Beach Reserve in Kiama was the start and finishing spot for the 20th running of the Red Scarf Rally. 96 entrants were greeted by not only perfect weather and a beautiful setting, but a terrific static display of bikes and cars from club members and sponsors. The coffee van was kept busy as were the ladies from the CWA providing both breakfast and lunch. Entrants were welcomed by President Peter Grimston and then Mayor Brian Petschler before being briefed on the choice of two routes. Both rides headed west to Jamberoo, with the long ride going up the pass to Robertson, and then south and down to Kangaroo Valley for a super morning tea put on by the local primary school’s P&C. The ride then backtracked up through Barrengarry to Kangaloon before returning to Kiama via Macquarie Pass. A brilliant ride of 180km through some terrific mountain passes and exceptional and varied scenery. Mark Gents gave all marshals a pre-determined intersection and 15 minutes head start on the field, and with Chief Marshal Graeme Cramp ensuring all Marshals were correctly positioned the entrants were able to fully enjoy their ride. The shorter ride of 80km was enjoyed by 30 riders staying on the flat under the escarpment. Travelling west to Jamberoo then north through lush dairy country passing by Jamberoo Action Park to Albion Park and then around Calderwood and Marshall Mount before returning to the Albion Park Bowling Club for a morning brew. Ably led by John Davison and a crew of marshalls, entrants were given the option of returning directly to Kiama or via the lookout on Saddleback Mountain. Warren Watling and Phil Howchin had signposted the run further assisting riders on the day. The shorter run has been included for the last 3 years to encourage older & smaller bikes to participate and we weren’t disappointed with a nice array of bikes, the oldest being Denis Tobler’s 1915 Motosacoche. Free camping was available for entrants in the village of Jamberoo and the presentation dinner was held at the Jamberoo Bowling Club with over 80 people enjoying the night. A highlight of the night was guest speaker Jim Scaysbrook. Rally organis- ers thanked the many sponsors responsible for the success of the rally and in particular those that added to the day with their static displays at Black Beach; City Coast MCs, Fraser MCs, Trevor Jordan MCs, SteelCity MCs, Zuma MCs, Shannons, Old Bike Magazine, Penrite and Total Tools. Entrants and club members were unanimous as “the best rally yet” and praised organisers, and in particular Mark and Barb Jents, Gordon Gregory and John Davison for their tireless work and efficiency. We look forward to again hosting riders to this beautiful part of the world next March.
