MZ musings
rebuilding by Vee Two, so when we heard that Paul was going to be guest of honour at the Island Classic, I offered it to Fergus Cameron for Paul to demo. So Brook Henry and Andrew Cathcart brought it over from Nannup for the weekend, as per the attached photo! So, definitely not a replica! Alan Cathcart UK I read with interest your article on the Eisen Schwein/Iron Pig in OBA 58. David Cameron reported that in an attempt to locate more of these beasts he contacted a seller in Adelaide who had imported three of them. That person is my friend, Nick, who bought them in England about four years ago. He was heading off to the Old Dart on a bike buying trip when I asked him to keep an eye out for an MZ ES 250/2 for me (I had seen one in Tony East’s ATE museum on the IOM and was quite taken with its individual styling). He subsequently sent me a link to a bike on eBay UK which I bought. He picked it up for me and in the process of breaking it down to ship, he discovered that they were quite well made (the main support for the front suspension, behind that substantial mudguard, is magnesium) and obviously designed for a backyard mechanic to maintain. He was so impressed that he found another for himself and a further one for spare parts (not necessary). On returning home we stripped the bikes completely to the crankshafts and restored them. As new mechanical and chassis parts are readily available from Hungary we did not need to cannibalize the third bike so restored that one as well. All bikes are in Adelaide and I regularly take mine to the hills for a spin. They handle like they are on rails and the riding position is very comfortable. Gear changes are a slow process as one waits for the crank mounted clutch to spin down with little engine braking effect but the engine is quite tractable with a wide powerband. Other than our
