Old Bike Australasia

Aussi Also anyone?

-

I am conducting research into the Aussi Also motorbike made in Melbourne in 1919-1920 in Melbourne. My interest stems from an extract from Rob Sayward’s book on Australian-made motorcycles where he mentions that one of the partners, Ike Walsh returned to the family farm at Kilmany near Sale in Victoria. It’s near where I live so I became inquisitive. The company that manufactured the bike was Russell, Walsh and Hitchcock. I have since discovered that Nicholas Walsh had a number of interesting motorcycle patents credited to him, as well as the patent for the impact driver. E.P.Hitchcock was an ANZAC, who won the DCM at Gallipoli. He returned to France where he was wounded 4 times in 5 weeks and was mentioned in dispatches twice. He was also a coast-watcher during the second world war and won the American Legion of Merit. He married an Agnes Russell, whose father started Hoyts cinemas. The Russell connection hasn’t been confirmed yet, it doesn’t seem to be anything to do with Agnes Russell, but I have a few leads.

I have discovered a fair bit so far including photos that I suspect have never been published. I have also made contact with one of the families who are looking into things for me as well. I haven’t exhausted all leads yet, and will keeping looking into it. Please contact me at bownz88@hotmail.com if you have any info to share. Any help would be appreciated.
