Are you out there, James?

Old Bike Australasia - - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR -

I have been trying to locate the whereabouts of a family motor cycle for quite some time but have just run up blind alleys. It is a 1948-49 James 197cc with plunger rear end, bought by my father in Sydney in 1948-49 which he rode for some time before he gave it to my brother and I to ride to work. When we had finished with the bike I sold it to a friend who also rode it to work. My Friend then gave the bike to the dentist in Childers, Victoria, who then passed this bike to his brother who was a doctor on the Gold Coast with a collection of old motor cycles. This would have been approx. 45 years ago and the Gold Coast is where the trail ends. If there is anyone who knows of the bike or any history of the bike I would very much like to hear from you. I showed the dealer the damage to the luggage rack and was told I could get it fixed – at my expense. Several months later the soft pack’s inside fabric began tearing. Point being, in good faith, I did try and patronise a small business by purchasing an accessory. It was not only inferior and damaged the luggage rack, it was almost 3 times the cost it would’ve been via internet/big box stores. Hence I do believe smaller businesses do have a role, in their own situation. Thanks for an excellent magazine! Bryan Fowler Oakdale, NSW
