Frank Arthur collection

Headlines Mossgreen auction

-

Frank Arthur was in at the beginnings of speedway and became one of our first star riders, competing with distinction in England from 1928 to 1934. A member of the pioneer Australia versus England test matches, he raced in 14 tests and captained four. He also won two British Championships and numerous major events in Australia. But it was his post-riding career as a promoter and sponsor of new talent that launched Frank to legend status, not just in the boom pre-war period, but in the austere times that followed. Arthur is credited with introducing midget car and stock car speedway and promoted at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Sportsground and Brisbane Exhibition Ground tracks for many years. He passed away in September 2007 but remained a powerful force within the sport right to the end and was posthumously inducted into the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame. On Sunday November 27, 2016, a collection of Frank Arthur’s trophies will be auctioned by Mossgreen at their premises at 926-930 High Street, Armadale in Melbourne. The lots include a 9 carat yellow gold helmet won by Frank in the 1928 UK season, a Sterling Silver “Scottish Gold Helmet” from 1929, a Sterling Silver and leather sash, and a collection of eight Sterling Silver trophies. Mossgreen conducted a very successful auction of fellow speedway pioneer Billy Lamont’s trophies and memorabilia last year and are confident the Arthur collection will achieve similar results.
