Perhaps the oldest motorcycle shop in Australia, Modak has closed its shop in Melbourne’s Elizabeth Street. Established in 1930, Modak has been in the hands of the Beanham family since 1955 and has operated from 299 Elizabeth Street since 1971. Owner David Beanham said the decision to close was purely an economical one, and was hastened by the Victorian Government’s Land Tax, which has more than doubled in recent years. He plans to lease the ground floor shop and operate from a room upstairs, which will involve moving the shelving that has been a fixture of the business for its entire existence. “We have always posted parts to people wherever they are in Australia. We are not closing down, but we are losing the shopfront,” he said. Telephone orders can be placed at (03) 9602 1229 or by email to [email protected]
