First published in 2011 and now in its third edition, this book by London-based Michael Scott, who has attended almost every motorcycle grand prix since 1984 in his capacity as one of the most respected journalists in the sport, remains a great read. Although he wasn’t there in the early days of the world championships, Scott has a deep appreciation for the achievements of the legendary names. The book is put together in an interesting way, with pen portraits of riders, technical appraisals and various milestones all mixed together, but which is very entertaining and easy to digest. Scott has managed to contrast the old and the modern side by side throughout the book, and the comparisons in circuit design (and safety), riding gear, and of course the motorcycles themselves are fascinating. The photographs are outstanding, not just from the old days but the more modern eras. This latest edition was published in 2017 with some of the modern photographs updated, and some of the earlier editions minor errors corrected – and Marc Marquez replacing Valentino Rossi on the front cover. Yesterday’s rooster is today’s feather duster, perhaps?
