Cut and thrust at Collie
HCMCWA Club Championships – Rd 3
What a contrast in weather conditions for the riders for Round 3 of the HCMC Club Championships at the Collie Motorplex after the very wet Round 2. Just a month later conditions could not have been better and the riders in all classes rose to the occasion and provided some excellent racing for the spectators. Around the pits much of the talk was about the Period 6 – 250GP/250 Production & Period 4 – 250 classes and who would or wouldn’t prevail amongst the group of hard chargers in the field. Matt Powell, Richard Langdon, Steve Crane, Mark Laing-Hughes, Paul Joshua and Steve McDermott were all in the mix for the round win. Langdon had had things pretty much to his liking in the previous two rounds but was coming under increasing pressure from both Powell and McDermott.
In the first race 17 starters assembled on the grid and it was Steve McDermott who led at the end of the first lap and looked to be in control until he suffered a severe loss of power but still managed fifth place. The winner was Matt Powell, Richard Langdon was just over a second in arrears in second place and Mark Laing-Hughes was third. I spoke to McDermott in the pits and it appeared that the bottom barrel had come loose and filled the motor with water, so sadly it was game over for the 14-time State Champion for the third round. The second race with only 14 starters, and it was Langdon who took a strong win from Powell, with LaingHughes taking third, with Crane fourth and Shaun Oliver Jnr rounding out the top five. The final race saw just 13 riders start the race and it was Langdon and Powell who dominated from the start. At T7 and riding into the late afternoon sun Langdon went to pass and clipped the curb which sent him crashing out of the race, allowing Powell to take a comfortable win. Second, and some 7 seconds in arrears, was Laing-Hughes with Crane a further 3 seconds behind, then Shaun Oliver Jnr in fourth with Paul Joshua rounding out the top five. In the P6 – 250GP class Mark LaingHughes took top honours with 65 points, second was Steve Crane on 56 and third was Paul Joshua with 52 points. In the P6 – Lightweight division it was Matt Powell in first place with 75 points, Shaun Oliver Jnr was second with 58 and third was Bob Hull on 53 points. In the P4 250 class Shaun Oliver Snr was the winner with 75 points.
Glen Ottley, winner of the P6 Formula 750. Steve Crane in the P5 Forgotten Era 250. Hayden Treversh made a clean sweep of the Junior races. P3 winner Brian Richardson.
